How to Be a Dog Psychic
Training Tips!
There are lots of good sources for training information. I list quite a few in my book, How To Be a Dog Psychic. A lot depends on exactly what you're looking for.
Have you just gotten your first puppy? Or has your family pooch suddenly developed a behavior problem? Do you have any experience with training dogs, or are you a novice? Are you hoping to win obedience trials, or do pet therapy work, or do you just want to walk your dog without being dragged down the street?
Obviously, I can't provide specific answers to all your training needs here--some issues may be easily handled, while others will require professional help. Also, I'd like to remind you that you must feel comfortable with whatever method you choose--follow your heart and mind, and do some research. You may find a technique that's better suited for you and your dog that's not listed here.
For starters, I'd suggest checking out the following links:
If you have children who will be sharing responsibility for caring for your dog, check out this award-winning website: How To Love Your Dog.
Look for a good basic obedience class being held locally. The American Kennel Club has developed a Canine Good Citizen test that covers ten basic items that every dog and dog owner should know. Go to the AKC site by clicking here to read the items.
If you want a more comprehensive guide to overall training that includes specific techniques for handling housebreaking, leash training, behavior problems, and security training, you might want to check out this reasonably priced e-book package: Sit, Stay, Fetch
You may also want to read an excellent book that will help you understand your relationship with your dog and how it affects your dog's behavior. It's "Understanding Dog Mind" by Dr. Bonnie Bergin, who founded Canine Companions for Independence. She also has an easy to follow videotape called Bonnie Bergin's Training Camp. Click on the titles to find out more.
If you have a dog with a long-term behavior issue that you'd like to resolve, check out Cesar Millan's DVD, People Training for Dogs. Mr. Millan is an expert in dog psychology and runs The Dog Psychology Center in Los Angeles where he has successfully rehabilitated numerous "vicious" dogs into a well-behaved pack. He also stars in the TV show, The Dog Whisperer. His book, Cesar's Way, is also available in hardback or CD format.
And don't forget to check out some local training resources. Sometimes just reading a book or watching a video isn't enough. And you might find that you and your dog enjoh attending a class; it can be motivational and fun! Check with your veterinarian, local shelters and rescue groups, and friends for recommendations. And once again, make sure that the trainer's methods are acceptable to you. Ask questions before signing up for any class!
